Garage Door Opener Repair Concord CA
When a garage door opener starts acting up, most companies have one answer: replace it. The opener won't run, makes strange noises, stops halfway, or works intermittently? They'll recommend a new unit before they even know what's wrong. I'm a mechanic, not a parts-swapper.
When an opener stops working, I don't automatically recommend replacing it. I take it apart and find out what's actually wrong. Sometimes it's a worn gear, a bad circuit board, or a failed limit switch β parts I can repair instead of replacing the entire opener.
If the opener is old enough that replacement parts aren't available anymore, I can often fabricate or modify what's needed to keep it running. It's the same difference between a mechanic who rebuilds a transmission and one who only knows how to replace it.
Before I do any work, I'll explain what's wrong, tell you whether it makes more sense to repair it or replace it, and give you the cost upfront.
How I Figure Out What's Actually Wrong
The first thing I'm working out on any opener call is which part is actually failing β the symptom and the cause aren't always the same thing.
For example, a fast-blinking light is usually the safety sensors at the bottom of the door, blocked or knocked out of line. Sometimes that's a five-minute alignment. Sometimes it's a broken wire or a short, which takes longer to track down. Either way, it's not a dead opener, and it's not a reason to buy a new opener.
Other issues, like a buzzing or grinding motor, take more digging. If the door isn't moving the way it should, I'm looking at the drive β the gear, the trolley, the chain or belt β or a door that's binding in the tracks and putting all the load on the opener. I always check every part of the door before I blame the motor.
When A Replacement Is the Honest Answer
Some problems take real diagnosing. I had a customer burning through wall control panels β he'd put a new one in, it would work for a couple of months, then start clicking and humming and quit. The panel he had was already the upgraded model, so the panel wasn't the problem. What was killing them was the main circuit board on the opener, shorting them out.
Once I figured that out, the math was simple, as the board alone was around $600; the unit was 18 years old, and these openers are rated only for 10 to 15 years of service. At that age, if it isn't the board that goes next, it's the motor or the gear assembly. So I advised the customer that a new opener wasn't much more than the board, and it wouldn't leave him waiting on the next part to go.
That's how these calls usually go. I find the real fault, tell you what it costs to fix, and tell you honestly when fixing it isn't the smart money.

What Customers Say
"Our garage door wouldn't open except manually. I called East Bay Garage Door Repair, spoke with Larry and was able to get an appointment for the next morning.
Larry arrived on time and found the issue: the belt mechanism. He gave us two options of either replacing the belt or replacing the opener motor.
I decided to replace the motor. Larry was very efficient and replaced the motor the same day.
The door now works excellently and is smooth and quiet when opening and closing. I would definitely recommend and use East Bay Garage Door Repair again. Thanks Larry!"
"Larry is a great guy.Β When my garage opener stopped working, I called him to diagnose the problem. He found that both the motor and the motherboard were faulty, but fortunately, they were still under warranty.Β Larry advised me to have Chamberlain send out the replacement parts instead of paying him for the parts.
Well, even after replacing all the parts, the opener still didn't work. However, Chamberlain eventually sent a new unit, and Larry installed it for me. Throughout this entire process, Larry was reliable and made multiple trips to ensure everything was working. I canβt think of any contractor Iβve worked with in the past who has been as responsible and accountable. I highly recommend Larry!"
"My garage door opener stopped working on a Sunday. I called Larry at East Bay Garage Door Repair late the next day. Not only did Larry give me a good deal on a new garage door opener with a battery backup and features like a camera, Wi-Fi, and LED lighting, but he was also able to fit me in the same day, even though I called late in the afternoon.
Originally, my appointment was supposed to be on Monday, but he finished another job early, and he was able to come to my house in the evening. I highly recommend East Bay Garage Door Repair for any of your garage door needs."
Opener Repair Questions
Can you repair all garage door opener brands?
Yes. I repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Linear, Wayne Dalton, and most other garage door opener brands. If replacement parts are still available, there's a good chance I can repair your opener instead of replacing it. If it's beyond repair or parts are no longer available, I'll explain why and let you know your options.
Why does my garage door opener run but the door doesn't move?
When the motor runs but nothing moves, the drive is the first place I look β a stripped gear, the trolley, or the chain or belt. It can also be the door itself: if it's binding or out of balance, the opener will run without lifting it. I check the door before I blame the opener.
Why does my door reverse when it closes?
Most of the time it's the safety sensors knocked out of alignment, something blocking the doorway, a force setting that needs adjusting, or the door binding in the tracks.
Do you replace garage door openers?
Yes. When a repair isn't worth it, I'll replace the opener and make sure the door is balanced and running right β a new opener can't make up for a door that's out of balance.
Opener Acting Up?
Give me a call before you buy a new opener. A lot of what looks like a dead unit turns out to be a repair, not a replacement β I'll take it apart, find out what's actually wrong, and tell you straight whether it's worth fixing or replacing.
