Garage Door Spring Repair Concord CA

Garage door spring repair in Concord is one of the most common service calls I get. Most spring replacements are $400 out the door, although some doors require larger springs and run closer to $500. Both prices include the springs, labor, and tax. I stock a variety of springs on my truck, so most repairs can be completed the same day.

Not every broken spring is replaced with the right spring. I've seen doors with springs that were undersized, oversized, or never properly balanced to begin with. When I replace a spring, I make sure the replacement is matched to the weight of the door and adjust the tension correctly so the door operates smoothly and the new spring lasts as long as possible.

How to Tell if Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken

A broken spring isn't always obvious. Sometimes you'll see a gap in the spring above the door, but other times the spring stays together and looks perfectly normal from the ground.

One of the easiest things to check is the bottom of the garage door itself. Stand inside the garage with the door closed and look at both bottom corners. When a spring breaks, the door will often sit slightly crooked, leaving a small gap under one corner where you can see daylight coming through.

Another quick test is to pull the red emergency release cord and disconnect the door from the opener. A properly balanced garage door should be fairly easy to lift by hand. If the door suddenly feels much heavier than normal, there's a good chance a spring has broken.

  • Daylight under one corner of the door β€” When one spring breaks, the door will often sit slightly crooked instead of resting evenly on the floor.
  • Loud bang from the garage β€” Many homeowners describe it as sounding like a gunshot.
  • Door opens partially or not at all β€” The opener is running, but the door isn't moving the way it should.
  • Door suddenly feels much heavier β€” Garage door springs carry most of the weight. Without them, even a healthy door can be difficult to lift.
  • Opener strains or sounds different β€” Continuing to use the opener with a broken spring can burn out the motor.

Don't keep trying to operate the door. A broken spring puts extra strain on the opener and can turn a spring repair into an garage door opener replacement. Give me a call and describe what's happening β€” I can usually tell whether the spring is the problem before scheduling service.

Single Spring on a Two-Car Door β€” Too Much Strain on the System

A customer called about a broken spring on their two-car garage. Before scheduling the repair, I asked how many springs were mounted above the door. Just one.
That immediately caught my attention because most two-car garage doors are designed to operate with two torsion springs. That's a problem because using a single spring means it's doing all the work of lifting and lowering a heavy door, which shortens its lifespan and puts more strain on the entire system.

Outcome: I measured and installed two properly sized springs, then balanced and tested the door.

One Spring Broke β€” I Replaced Both, Here's Why

A customer in the Dana Estates neighborhood had a standard 16-by-7 two-car garage door with one broken spring. The other spring was still intact, so technically I could have replaced just the broken one. Instead, I recommended replacing both.
Both springs had been installed at the same time and had been doing the same amount of work for years. When one finally breaks, the other usually isn't far behind. Replace only the broken spring and you'll likely be paying for another service call within a few weeks when the second spring snaps.

Outcome: I replaced both springs and set the proper tension on each.

When a Broken Spring Burns Out the Opener

A customer in Holbrook Heights called because one of her garage door openers had quit. She had two single-car doors, each with a LiftMaster jackshaft opener. As far as she knew, it was an opener problem.
It wasn't. The spring on that door had broken, and she kept holding the button down to force the door open. With no spring helping it, the opener strained against the full weight of the door until it burned out. The broken spring was the real cause; the dead opener was just the first sign she noticed.
If the broken spring had been caught sooner, the opener likely would have survived β€” and she'd have only paid for the spring.

Outcome: I replaced the broken spring, installed a new opener, and tested the door.

"Came home from work and the garage door had only opened up halfway. After a quick check, I found out that one of the springs was broken. After a few calls to different companies, I finally settled on East Bay Garage Door Repair. A very nice man (Larry) took down my info over the phone and setup a time to come out. He showed up the same night in about an hour, to my surprise! He then quickly checked out the garage door and explained what needed to be done. He was detailed and upfront, so I know exactly what I'm paying for. Less than an hour later, I got a functioning garage door again! Not only did the garage door open and close properly, but it was also quieter!! Honestly, I thought Larry was a magician when he showed up because I was in shock about his speedy response! I would definitely tell all of my friends and family about Larry and East Bay Garage Door Repair!Β His price was reasonable, and I would surely call on Larry again if there's a need!"

"I called East Bay Garage Door Repair after the company I found on Angie's list was not responding at all. I tried three times to let them know our cars were stuck in the garage and it was urgent, but there was no response. Finally got a hold of them. They said we would be there in 2 or 3 hours, but they never showed up, so I got tired of waiting and called East Bay Garage Door Repair and got a hold of Larry, who said he would be here in an hour. Yep, sure enough, he showed up on time and found a broken spring, which he replaced. What a stand up guy he is, and he did us right. He is good at what he does and does what he says. "

"My garage door spring suddenly snapped, and I called around to get some quotes. Found East Bay Garage Door Repair who gave a good quote and was available to come out the same day. The technician, Larry, was a bit late, but it was not a big deal. He was a friendly guy and came prepared to replace my spring. well he actually replaced both springs as he said that's all he would do because the other spring is ready to go, also saving me another service call. I think that's a good business practice. The door works perfectly now, and Larry also lubed everything and checked it before he left to make sure it was working properly. Great guy and very professional."

Spring Repair Questions

Can I open the door with a broken spring?

Sometimes, yes. If your door has two springs and only one has broken, you may be able to get the door open one time to get your car out. Stand on the side of the door with the broken spring and have your opener remote in your hand. Press the remote and, as the door starts moving, help lift that side of the door. The good spring is still carrying part of the load, and you're helping with the rest.
I wouldn't keep doing it, though. The opener is under extra strain and can burn out if it's forced to lift a door with a broken spring. Once you've gotten the car out, leave the door down and give me a call.

Do both springs need to be replaced if only one snapped?

Yes β€” I replace both, every time. Here's the reasoning. Springs are rated for a set number of cycles, one cycle being the door going up and back down. When a door has two springs, they're installed together and go through the same cycles, so they wear at the same rate. If one has snapped, the other is right behind it β€” replacing just the broken one means paying for a second visit within weeks when the other goes. Doing both at once is the only way I'll do it, because it's the right way to do it.

How long does spring replacement take?

Usually one to two hours. First I inspect the broken spring and measure its wire diameter and length β€” that tells me the correct size, and whether the spring that was on there was even right to begin with. Then at the truck I cut the new spring to size, install it, set the tension, and balance the door before I test it.

Are some springs better than others?

Yes. Springs are rated by cycles β€” one cycle is the door opening and closing once. A standard spring is built for around 10,000 cycles. I also carry a 30,000-cycle spring that lasts about three times as long, which is worth the upgrade on a door that gets used a lot β€” if the garage is your main way in and out of the house, you're going through cycles fast. When I'm out there I'll tell you which one makes sense for how often you use the door.

How soon can you come out?

I can come out the same day in most cases. I carry a range of springs on my truck for every situation and door size, so once I'm there I can usually replace it on the spot and have your door working again the same visit.

Need Your Garage Door Spring Replaced?

Give me a call and let me know what the door is or isn't doing. If it turns out to be a broken spring, I can usually be there the same day with the spring you need on my truck and have your garage door working again in just a couple of hours.
